The report calls the tariffs “a consequence of personal pique,” adding that Trump had hoped to intervene in the May skirmishes between the two South Asian nuclear powers to bolster his diplomatic profile.
India has consistently maintained its “red line” of rejecting third-party involvement in its disputes with Pakistan, a position that clashed with Trump’s repeated claims that he helped resolve global conflicts, including between India and Pakistan. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt even argued in July that Trump’s efforts deserved recognition with a Nobel Peace Prize, underscoring how seriously the administration viewed his mediation ambitions.
Jefferies’ analysis also points to agriculture as a sticking point in U.S.-India trade relations. India, where 40% of the workforce is tied to farming, has resisted opening its agricultural sector to foreign imports to protect its 250 million farmers and laborers.
