Edmonton is about to witness the return of a nostalgic Canadian brand as Zellers prepares to open a new store in the former Hudson’s Bay space at Londonderry Mall. The store, which will occupy roughly 60,000 square feet on the main floor, is expected to launch with a soft opening in the coming weeks, according to the mall’s owner, Leyad.
Henry Zavriyev, CEO of Leyad, said the decision to bring Zellers back to north Edmonton was driven by the needs of the surrounding community. With a neighborhood full of families, nearby schools, and a strong residential base, Zavriyev believes the brand’s mix of affordable home goods and clothing for men, women, and children will be a perfect fit. Shoppers can also look forward to the return of Zeddy, the beloved Zellers mascot, as part of the store’s comeback.
This opening marks a significant milestone as Londonderry Mall becomes the first Canadian shopping centre to repurpose a former Hudson’s Bay location since the retailer closed its doors nationwide at the end of June. The bankruptcy of Hudson’s Bay earlier this year ended a long chapter in Canadian retail history, with its intellectual property — including Zellers’ famous “Lowest Price Is The Law” slogan — sold to Canadian Tire for $30 million in May.
While Canadian Tire has clarified that it did not purchase the Zellers brand itself, the revival of the store at Londonderry Mall signals that the iconic Canadian name still holds strong appeal. The announcement follows the success of Hudson’s Bay’s pop-up Zellers locations in 2023, including temporary shops at Kingsway Mall and Southgate Centre, which drew significant customer interest.
For many Edmontonians, this reopening represents more than just another store — it’s a return to a familiar shopping experience that blends nostalgia with practical value. The launch is expected to bring renewed energy to Londonderry Mall and potentially set the stage for additional Zellers openings across the country.
