The much-anticipated Canada Day long weekend is here, but it could start on a stormy note for many parts of Ontario. A low-pressure system that recently caused heavy rain and flooding in the Prairies is moving through Ontario, bringing similar conditions.
Rain and Thunderstorms Expected
The primary focus is on significant rainfall, with a widespread threat of thunderstorms, including pockets of severe weather, expected on Saturday. Southwestern Ontario experienced steady rain on Saturday morning, with multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms following.
Impact on the Greater Toronto Area and Beyond
Rainfall will reach the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) by midday and extend to eastern Ontario, including Ottawa, by the afternoon. Areas along and south of the 401 corridor, such as London and Niagara Falls, are expected to see 20-40 mm of rain by Sunday. This heavy rain may cause pooling on major highways and reduce visibility, so exercise caution while traveling.
Cottage Country and Thunderstorm Risks
Rain totals will decrease farther north into cottage country, with 10-20 mm expected through the weekend. While most thunderstorms are expected to remain non-severe, there is a chance for stronger storms in northeastern Ontario and parts of the southwest due to daytime heating and breaks in cloud cover. These storms could bring strong wind gusts and hail.
Sunday and Canada Day Forecast
Sunday will bring drier weather to southwestern Ontario and the GTA, though showers may linger in the east. More tranquil conditions are anticipated for Canada Day celebrations on Monday.
