Donald Trump Continues to Mock Trudeau, Suggests Canada as 51st U.S. State

President-elect Donald Trump took aim at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday, proposing that Canada become the 51st state of the United States. Trump, known for his sharp commentary, suggested that this move would lower taxes for Canadians and even proposed NHL legend Wayne Gretzky as Canada’s potential leader.

“I just left Wayne Gretzky, ‘The Great One’ as he is known in Ice Hockey circles,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada — You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.’” Trump added that while Gretzky showed no interest, Canadians should start a “Draft Wayne Gretzky” movement, calling it “fun to watch.”

Mocking Trudeau’s Leadership and Trade Practices

Trump’s taunts extended beyond Gretzky, with repeated references to Trudeau as “Governor of Canada.” He claimed that if Canada joined the U.S., taxes would drop by over 60%, businesses would double in size, and the country would receive unmatched military protection.

The comments come amid escalating trade tensions between the two nations. Last month, Trudeau reportedly warned Trump at a Mar-a-Lago meeting that a proposed 25% tariff on Canadian imports could devastate Canada’s economy. Trump’s alleged response? “So your country can’t survive unless it’s ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion?”

Dissatisfaction with Trudeau Grows

Trudeau, who has served as prime minister since 2015, is under increasing pressure as Canadians grapple with high living costs and a worsening housing crisis. With a federal election expected by October 2025, dissatisfaction with his leadership has grown even within his own Liberal Party. Recent polls show the opposition Conservative Party leading the race.

Trump’s Continued Jabs

Trump has frequently targeted Trudeau, criticizing Canada’s trade policies and suggesting that the country exploits the United States. His latest remarks, though provocative, reflect his broader approach to international relations—marked by humor, sharp criticism, and unorthodox proposals.

As Canada navigates its internal challenges and external trade pressures, Trump’s remarks have added a new layer of complexity to the evolving relationship between the two nations.
